Direct mail has a reputation for being expensive. But really, there are options at nearly every price point. The key is choosing the right format for your message, your audience, and your budget.
At Tactive, we help marketers build direct mail campaigns that match both their creative vision and their budget. Sometimes that means a simple postcard. Sometimes it means a custom kit. Or sometimes… it’s something in between.
We’ve put together a practical breakdown of common direct mail formats – from the most budget-friendly to the most customizable – and where they tend to make the most sense for your brand.
Flat Mail
Flat mail includes anything relatively thin that ships like a letter. It’s typically the most budget-friendly place to start and works well for announcements, promotions, and awareness campaigns.
(Postage pricing referenced from the United States Postal Service as of March 2026.)
Good ($): Postcards
A postcard is a rectangular piece of unfolded cardstock that ships without an envelope. Postcards are ideal when your goal is high-volume reach at a low cost. Standard postcard stamps start at $0.61 – the most affordable single direct mail option.

To qualify for postcard postage pricing, the piece must be:
- 5–6 inches long
- 3.5–4.25 inches tall
- 0.007–0.016 inches thick (roughly the thickness of an index card)
Why postcards?
Postcards are one of the most cost-effective ways to execute a direct mail campaign. Because there’s no envelope, labels, or additional assembly, printing and fulfillment costs stay low – especially at higher quantities. But keep in mind: postcards are small and highly standardized, which means they can sometimes blend into the rest of the mail stack. Strong design and messaging are key if you choose this method.
They’re ideal for:
- Event promotions
- Quick announcements
- Promotional offers
- Awareness campaigns
Better ($$): Letters
If you want a little more space to tell your story, a traditional letter or folded self-mailer is often the next step up.
A standard letter includes anything mailed inside a traditional envelope or folded into a sealed self-mailer that ends up as a letter-sized piece. Standard letter stamps start at $0.78.

To qualify for letter pricing, pieces must be:
- 5–11.5 inches long
- 3.5–6.125 inches wide
- Maximum thickness: 0.25 inches
- Maximum weight: 3.5 oz
Why letters?
Letters give you more space to communicate while still keeping costs manageable. Going with an envelope creates a moment of curiosity because recipients have to open it to see what’s inside – while folded self mailers have the added benefit of keeping nothing between your recipient and your content.
They’re often used for:
- Invitations to events or webinars
- Personal outreach from sales teams
- Campaigns that require longer copy or storytelling
- Including small inserts like brochures, coupons, or reply cards
Better ($$$): Oversized or Irregular Mail
If your goal is to stand out immediately in the mailbox, oversized or irregular flat mail gives you the most creative freedom. These formats typically incur a non-machinable surcharge from the post office, starting around $1.27.

Examples of irregular mail include:
- Square envelopes
- Vertical envelopes
- Rigid envelopes
- Envelopes with clasps, string, or buttons
- “Lumpy” envelopes containing small items
Similarly, oversized flats (larger than a standard letter-sized envelope) start around $1.63 and generally must be:
- 11.5–15 inches long
- 6.125–12 inches wide
- Maximum thickness: 0.75 inches (uniform)
- Maximum weight: 13 oz
Why irregular mail?
Irregular shapes naturally catch attention because they feel different from standard mail pieces. They also create more room for creative design, inserts, or lightweight promotional items.
They’re often used for:
- Product launch announcements
- High-impact event invitations
- Mini lookbooks, catalogs, or brand magazines
- ABM campaigns targeting high-value prospects
Dimensional Mail
Flat mail is often the most cost-effective place to start. But when the goal is to create a memorable experience, many brands move into dimensional mail – or, as we like to call it, 3DDM.
Dimensional mail includes packages or anything with depth that ships as a parcel rather than a letter. These pieces tend to cost more to ship, but they also create some of the most memorable direct mail marketing experiences, especially for high-value prospects or targeted campaigns.
Good ($): Bubble Mailers
Bubble mailers are usually the most economical dimensional option. You get the benefit of sending something tangible while still keeping packaging costs relatively manageable.

They’re great for:
- Lightweight promotional items
- Small samples
- Branded merchandise
Better ($$): Standard Boxes
Standard boxes open the door to stronger presentation without requiring full custom packaging. This format strikes a nice balance between cost control and brand experience.

Common approaches include:
- Stock box sizes
- White or kraft boxes
- Branded labels or belly bands to personalize
Honorable mention: mailing tubes, which can be a fun format for posters, blueprints, or other creative concepts. These typically offer the price benefits of standard boxes with the added flair of an unexpected shape.
Best ($$$): Custom Boxes
When brands want a campaign to truly feel like an experience, custom packaging offers the most creative freedom. With full control over the packaging, inserts, and presentation, brands can create a moment, not just a delivery.
Custom box mailers work especially well when you want to include multiple elements, like promotional products, samples, or printed materials, in a cohesive package. Because the box itself becomes part of the brand experience, this format is ideal for campaigns where making a memorable impression matters as much as delivering the message.

This format is often used for:
- Product launches
- Influencer or creator campaigns
- Account-based marketing (ABM) outreach
- Executive gifting
- High-value prospecting campaigns
How Do You Know if Your Direct Mail Campaign Works?
Like any marketing channel, direct mail should be measurable. The key is building in ways to track engagement and connect physical mail to digital actions.
Some of the most common tracking methods include:
- QR codes: Adding a QR code to your mailer makes it easy for recipients to visit a landing page or learn more about your offer.
- Personalized URLs (PURLs): A custom URL tied to each recipient allows marketers to track exactly who engages with a campaign.
- Dedicated landing pages: Creating a campaign-specific landing page helps you measure traffic and conversions directly tied to your mailer.
- Promo or redemption codes: Unique offer codes make it easy to track purchases or signups generated by a direct mail piece.
Direct mail doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Some campaigns work best as simple postcards sent at scale, or could benefit from dimensional packages that create an entire moment. When the format, message, and audience are aligned, direct mail becomes a powerful part of a modern marketing strategy.
