How to Write Better Swag Copy
August 7, 2025
When it comes to promotional products, design gets most of the focus – and for good reason. But don’t forget about your copy!

What you say on your swag matters just as much as how it looks. The right phrase can reinforce your brand voice, make someone smile, or turn a giveaway into a conversation starter.

So how do you make a big impact in an inch… or less? When every word needs to carry weight AND look good doing it?

Whether you’re designing apparel, packaging, or giveaways, these are Tactive’s top DO’s and DON’T’s for writing copy for swag that captivates, connects, and converts.

✅ DO: Let your brand voice come through.

Whether you’re bold, witty, buttoned-up, or playful, make sure your tone matches your brand.

❌ DON’T: Rely on your logo to do all the work.

You don’t need to lead with your logo on every product. Let clever copy and great design show off your brand’s personality.

✅ DO: Have fun with the product.

Add a cheeky nod to the item (if that fits your vibe). Smart, item-specific copy makes swag feel intentional, not like an afterthought.

❌ DON’T: Slap the same copy on every item.

Tailor the copy and layout to each product for maximum impact! Customize the message by item – what works on a notebook might flop on a hoodie.

✅ DO: Keep space and readability in mind.

You’re working with limited real estate. Keep it short, clear, and high-impact – and if the font has to be microscopic to fit on the product, it’s probably too much copy.

❌ DON’T: Try to cram in too much.

Too much copy means that none of it gets read. Less really is more here – no need to include your website, address, phone, fax, a QR code, and four social handles. (Just pick one!)

✅ DO: Take inspiration from retail.

Check out the kind of messaging on branded merch from your favorite retailers, musicians, and artists. Simple, clever, and stylish copy wins.

Remember that great swag doesn’t just feature your logo; it speaks for your entire brand. Choosing the right words makes it something people actually want to wear, use, or show off.
